I moved from my hometown of Toronto, Canada, to the Kitchener-Waterloo area in 2021, and a few months later found myself stuck in a rut with respect to my physical strength and body. Menopause and the pandemic lockdowns had wreaked havoc with my hormones and habits, leaving me heavier than ever, mysteriously afflicted with various aches and pains, and filled with self-judgement.
I’d always loved yoga and Pilates, having trained as a teacher of both, but I knew that if I wanted to rebuild my strength and carry myself well through the second half of life, I needed to return to resistance training.
So I joined a nearby commercial gym.
Most of the trainers seemed to be in their twenties or thirties — strong, fast, and at a completely different stage of life. I didn’t see anyone who looked like me, or like they would understand what a midlife body feels like. That absence is part of what pulled me toward the physical aspect of this work.
Those early weeks were humbling. I felt out of place, unsure, and overwhelmed. But I kept showing up. And slowly, strength returned. Not through deprivation and punishing intensity, rather through consistency, progression and dignity. This journey has taught me that the human body, when correctly supported, is amazing and can do incredible things that support living the second half of life with purpose and joy.
The early years of my career were spent in the public service, where I watched in dismay as superb people were slowly demoralized by a system that overvalued rank and positional authority, resulting in huge inefficiencies and a great cost to human well-being. I didn't know yet how to change this, but I spoke up often about what I was noticing and how distressing it was.
Frequently, colleagues would come into my office, shut the door, then break down in tears as they shared their frustrations. As time went on I resolved to find a way to powerfully help people reclaim their agency so they could put their energy at work into service with more ease and joy.
In the early 2000's, a new modality called Coaching emerged. It felt like it would fill the gap between simply noticing and actually helping things change, so I jumped right in. I founded Anjali Leadership in 2005 and have spent more than two decades working closely with leaders across North America. Many of the organizations who engaged my services continue to win awards for their outstanding company culture and customer service, to this day.

My work with leaders over the past 20 years has been largely at the level of thought and habit. Many of my clients are intellectually brilliant, but their career success has come at the expense of their physical well-being (and often their ability to be present and connected with the people they love most).
As my own well-being path has unfolded, it's become clear to me that it is essential to build and maintain strength in ALL of the ways: emotionally, mentally, spiritually AND physically. In 2026, I put my noticing into action and certified as a Personal Training Specialist and Myofascial Release Teacher so I could add a physical dimension to my work with integrity.
Women are living longer than ever before, but often the second half of our lives are spent with increasing physical frailty and fragility. At the same time, women over 50 are optimally poised to create a great deal of good with our efforts. Children are launched and don't require the same level of our energy and attention. We are not as concerned anymore about what others think of us or our choices. And many are standing on more solid ground financially and relationally than we were in our younger years.
Strength training is one of the most direct, dignified ways to help women reclaim steadiness, confidence, and agency in their bodies, for the sake of their enjoyment of the rest of their lives, and for the sake of our great grandchildren's future.
Training women over 50 isn’t separate from the leadership work I’ve done for decades. When a woman feels strong in her body, she moves through her life differently. She stands differently. She speaks differently. She trusts herself more deeply. Strength changes how she leads in her work, in her relationships, and in her own life.
Whether you meet me in the gym as a personal trainer, or on the phone or over zoom for whole-self coaching, the centre of the work is the same: Your strength. Your agency,. Your purpose. Your joy.
